What is Microdermabrasion?

Microdermabrasion is an office based procedure that uses gentle mechanical abrasion combined with suction to remove the outermost layer of dead skin. After the procedure, the unearthed skin will instantly look and feel smoother and more radiant. A series of treatments can be used to reduce scarring, fine lines and skin discoloration.

What conditions can be treated with microdermabrasion?

Microdermabrasion helps improve many skin conditions and treats minor imperfections. Conditions treated include:

  • Sun Damaged Skin
  • Mild Acne Scars
  • Enlarged Pores
  • Clogged Pores
  • Fine lines
  • Shallow Wrinkles
  • Skin rejuvenation

What is the difference between crystal based microdermabrasions and crystal-free microdermabrasions?

There are 2 different main forms of microdermabrasion machines. Crystal based system use little sand-like particles to abrade the skin and crystal free devices use a rough surface (often diamond tip based) to abrade the skin. The end result is gentle exfoliation of the outer layer of skin with either technique.

Who performs the microdermabrasion procedure?

All the procedures are performed in our Brandon office by a clinical licensed esthetician directly under the supervision of our dermatologists.

Is microdermabrasion covered by insurance?

Microdermabrasion is not covered by any health insurance plans.

What is the downtime with microdermabrasion?

There is no downtime with microdermabrasion treatments. Afterwards you will be mildly red for approximately 15 minutes and can return to work right away. It is a so called “lunch time procedure.”

What is the difference between a Micordermabrasion and a chemical peel?

Microdermabrasion uses a machine to physically abrade the skin and remove the top layer. Chemicals peels involve the use of chemicals to remove the outer layer of the epidermis. In general, there is more downtime with chemical peels.

What is the difference between a Micordermabrasion and dermabrasion?

Microdermabrasion is a mild outpatient procedure that abrades the skin and removes the top layer of the epidermis. There is no downtime with this procedure. Dermabrasion is used for severe acne scars and wrinkles and involves removing the entire epidermis and creating an injury into the dermis. Dermabrasion has about 2 weeks of downtime, whereas microderm only has a few minutes of redness.

How many treatments are needed in Microdermabrasion?

While patients can see results after a single treatment, for best results most patients do a series of 4-6 treatments.
